The One Where We Put Fish In The Coffee Maker

Someday they’ll make a coffee machine with a “salmon” button on it.  Until then. . .

I couldn’t believe it, but the fish was perfectly cooked!  It was even better than the salmon that we cooked in the dishwasher.  (True story.)  The dishwasher salmon was a little dry.  We probably should have taken it out before the “dry” cycle, or not pressed the button for “scrub: pots & pans.”  Rookie mistake.

How To Poach Salmon In Your Coffee Maker
Inspired by an article on NPR’s food blog, “The Salt”

1.  Make sure there are no beans in the grinder or grounds in the filter.

2.  Fill the reservoir with 3 cups of water.

3.  Put a piece of salmon and any seasonings you want (like soy sauce, ginger, or garlic) in the carafe.

4.  Run the cycle just as if it were coffee.

5.  Let the salmon sit in the coffee maker until it looks cooked.  The exact timing will depend on how thick your piece of fish is.  Ours was a medium-sized filet and it took 7 minutes.  In the meantime, you can make a sauce for the fish if you like.

6. Drain the water from the carafe and plate the salmon.  Serve.
