The Couch Brigade

A few days ago, our least stupid dog (Thunder) bit her own tongue in half while playing by herself.  I don’t want to get into the bloody details, so let me just say this: other than the fact that U2 was on the radio and I was shopping on-line at the time, it was a lot like a scene from World War I.  She’ll be fine, though, and someday I’ll forget about the week I spent holding an ice pack for a dog.

thunder icing her tongueAs luck would have it, I myself had a wee medical intervention the other day.  (If you must know, my feet were switched at birth with those of a male Sasquatch, and they require occasional doctoring to remain in perfect Sasquatch shape.)  So we’re both lounging on the couch, high on prescription painkillers.  We alternate between sleeping and drunk-dialing Scott at work to ask for pizza.

Due to a slight miscommunication, Scott’s secretary thinks I’m prank calling her, and the pizza has not been forthcoming.

So here’s what I’m having instead: my favorite tuna salad on a croissant.

tuna sandwichI like to put dried cranberries in my tuna salad for a sweet and tangy kick, a little Worcestershire sauce to temper the fishiness, and some celery and shallots for crunch.

And I put it on a croissant, because croissants make everything better, don’t you think?tuna sandwich

Happy sandwiching from the couch brigade!

Cranberry Tuna Salad {Download & Print Recipe}
by eggton

Ingredients: {Makes enough for 2 large sandwiches}

1 12-oz. can tuna (I find that light meat tuna is tastier and less dry than white tuna)

1/3 c. mayonnaise

1 stalk celery, sliced up the middle once or twice and finely diced

3 Tbsp. shallot, diced

2 Tbsp. dried cranberries

1 tsp. Dijon mustard

1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1/8 tsp. salt

optional ingredients:  a little bit of honey or sugar (I used 1/2 tsp. honey), a dash of smoked paprika,  a little vinegar

Drain the tuna and place it in a medium-sized bowl.  Add the remaining ingredients and stir until evenly combined.   Serve!

I feel bad for you both – a broken tongue and sasquatch feet are two of the worst places to have injuries.

And yes, everything is better on a croissant.

    • I hope you have a tongue/sasquatch-injury-free summer, my friend.

Aw, hope you two get better soon! Man, what a good idea to make a sandwich on a croissant…i don’t know why I haven’t done this. Also, you have reminded me how much I like tunafish and how little I eat it. Looks delish 🙂

    • I forgot about tuna all year. Then I found a can in the back of the pantry and the rest was history. We just went to Costco and bought a 20-pack. Whoot!

  4. I laughed so hard at “Sasquatch feet”! Thanks for that highly comic relief after picturing poor Thunder with her self-bitten (and, thankfully, re-attached?) tongue. That said, I hope your feet are quickly returning to a healthful state of Sasquatchiness.

Gorgeous tuna-on croissant. And that fruit salad looks wonderful, too!

  7. OMG! Poor pup! And poor you. I hope you are both feeling better and on the mend. The tuna recipe is a must try and oh, how I love okra. My Bloody Mary’s are generally topped off with okra as well as olives! Thanks for sharing.

  10. great post, and i suppose, least stupid, i a bit of a compliment in an off-handed way )

  11. Awww. Just plain heartwarming to see you holding the ice pack for Thunder. And the okra on the toothpick totally sold me. I am with you on the light tuna (vs white), and as a nice bonus it’s cheaper too! I love mine with onion, celery, capers and black pepper.

I hope your feet feel better soon.

  12. oh…NO. I’m willing the two of you to feel better. because you just MUST! that little photo of you holding the ice pack for Thunder is the cutest thing ever, mostly because what dog even lets you do that? aw. 🙂

  13. Poor Thunder – and poor you! I hope you’re both feeling better. The sandwich is beautiful, and croissants do make everything better! Thanks for sharing.

  14. Neither injury sounds like a “kiss it and make it better” situation. Pharmaceuticals, I say, pharmaceuticals. And cranberries make so many things better.

  15. Man, oh man, it has been a bad week for injuries. You should probably come lay on the couch beside Rosie Beaucoup – I’ll cook for both of you. There will be lots of butter involved. Actually, Rosie was just sayin’ that she might like some tuna salad last night… clearly, we’re in good company!

    Feel better soon, lady! xox

  16. Man, you can’t even put a plastic cone around a chewed tongue! Rats!
I can hear her sizing up the tuna croissant–“How much is this gonna hurt?”

  17. Ahhhhh dumb dogs. The story of my life 😉 Feel better soon XO

I feel a strange kinship with Thunder – about age 4, I fell off a rocking chair and bit halfway through my tongue. No one, however, held an ice pack for me. I feel cheated.

Poor you, and poor Thunder. I hope you both heal quickly and get your coveted pizza.
